Updated: Aug 18

Introduction

The legal sector continues to evolve, with small and medium-sized law firms facing increasing pressure to balance growth ambitions with profitability. According to the latest LexisNexis Bellwether 2026 report, firms are performing strongly in client service and many are seeing revenue growth. However, operational inefficiencies, capacity constraints and talent shortages are preventing some firms from fully realising their potential. The firms that thrive over the coming years are likely to be those that focus on efficiency, embrace technology and maintain a relentless focus on client experience.

Growth Remains Strong Across the Sector

The report reveals that growth among small and medium-sized law firms continues to improve. Nearly two-thirds (62%) of firms reported growth compared with three to four years ago, up from 58% in the previous survey. At the same time, the number of firms reporting declining revenue fell from 5% to 4%. This suggests that despite economic uncertainty and increasing competition, many firms are continuing to expand and find new opportunities.

While organic growth remains the most popular strategy, firms are becoming increasingly selective about how they grow. Ambitions for purely organic expansion have eased slightly, while interest in mergers and acquisitions has increased. This indicates a more strategic approach to achieving sustainable growth.

Client Experience Continues to Be a Key Strength

One of the standout findings from the report is the confidence firms have in their client service. An impressive 84% of respondents rated their client experience as either good or excellent. In a market where client expectations continue to rise, this demonstrates that smaller firms remain highly effective at building strong relationships and delivering personalised service.

Firms highlighted several areas where they excel:

  • Delivering strong client experiences

  • Providing a single point of contact

  • Offering diverse expertise to solve client problems

  • Maintaining a positive organisational culture

These factors help smaller practices compete effectively against larger firms and national providers.

Productivity Challenges Are Holding Firms Back

Despite strong client satisfaction and healthy growth figures, many firms face significant operational challenges. Administrative work remains the biggest workflow obstacle, affecting more than half of respondents (52%). Case management and document drafting also continue to place considerable demands on staff time.

These inefficiencies create a knock-on effect throughout the business. Time spent on routine administrative processes reduces fee-earning capacity, limits scalability and places additional pressure on resources. As firms continue to grow, many are recognising the need to simplify workflows and make greater use of technology to improve productivity.

Increasing Pressure on Profitability

While revenue growth remains positive, profitability is becoming a greater concern. The report found that many firms struggle to maintain low overheads and protect margins. Operational costs, combined with increasing demands on staff, mean that revenue growth does not always translate into stronger profits.

The most profitable areas of legal work continue to be:

  • Litigation and dispute resolution

  • Private client services, including wills, probate and trusts

These practice areas were most frequently identified as contributing positively to profitability.

However, even firms operating in profitable sectors must ensure work is delivered efficiently if margins are to be maintained.

Talent Remains a Growing Concern

Another major challenge highlighted by Bellwether 2026 is talent acquisition and retention. The proportion of firms reporting difficulties attracting and retaining staff has increased, while capacity constraints and resource shortages are now among the most significant barriers to growth.

Talent attraction/retention | ██████████████ 27%

Capacity/resource constraints | █████████████ 25%

As workloads increase and competition for legal talent intensifies, firms must find ways to improve employee engagement, develop skills and support flexible working practices while maintaining profitability.

Conclusion - The Formula for Success in 2026

The report paints the picture of a sector that is optimistic but increasingly pragmatic. Client relationships remain strong, growth is improving and confidence levels are high. Yet firms recognise that future success will depend less on winning additional work and more on how effectively that work is delivered.

The most successful firms are likely to focus on:

  • Streamlining administrative processes

  • Adopting technology to improve efficiency

  • Managing capacity more effectively

  • Investing in talent retention and development

  • Continuing to deliver exceptional client experiences

In short, the Bellwether 2026 report suggests that the next phase of growth for UK law firms will be defined by operational excellence. The message is clear: firms that become leaner, more focused and more efficient will be best positioned to achieve sustainable profitability in an increasingly competitive legal landscape.
