Are you going to the party?

Mention U.S. President Donald Trump, economic tariffs, and the Scottish rock legends - The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and you might think that this is a list of late-night topics of conversation down at the pub. However, delve a little deeper, and a fascinating link emerges - one that ties together history, rebellion, and the politics of trade.
Trump, as we all know, loves a tariff. Imposing levies on imported goods, seeking to reduce trade deficits, protecting American jobs, and strengthening domestic industries. That kind of rhetoric. His strategy echoes past protectionist policies, but it also stirs-up controversy, as tariffs (as we also all know) lead to increased prices for consumers and put a further strain on already strained international relations.
So where is the link to our subject matter?
The tariffs approach to economic warfare harks back to one of the most famous protests in American history - the Boston Tea Party on 16 December, 1773. In response to Britain’s Tea Act, American colonists disguised as Native Americans, furiously dumped 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbour to protest against unjust taxation without representation and the East India Company's tea monopoly. This defiant act was a pivotal moment in the lead-up to the American Revolution and remains an enduring symbol of resistance against economic oppression.
Now fast-forward a couple of hundred of years.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, known for their theatrical performances and rebellious spirit, immortalised this historical moment in their song The Boston Tea Party. Released in 1976, the track captures the rowdy defiance of those early American revolutionaries, with lyrics that celebrate standing up against powerful forces. -"The King has said he's going to put a tax on tea - and that's the reason why y'all Americans drink coffee!"
In a way, the song serves as a rock-and-roll reminder of the tensions that still exist today in global trade wars and political power struggles. It's also a cracking song (in my opinion as ever).
So, whether through Trump’s tariffs, a legendary protest, or a Scottish rock anthem, the Boston Tea Party continues to make waves - proving that history has a way of repeating itself in the most unexpected ways.
Did I mention Donald Trump's Scottish heritage? Spooky!
Anyway, ponder on all of this whilst enjoying some classic Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
